Puttur is the second largest and the fastest growing city in Dakshina Kannada district, having a population of about 60,000. Its 31 municipal wards generate 16 to 17 tons of waste per day. Out of this 5 to 6 tons of dry waste is recycled and 6 tons of wet waste is committed to windrow composting. Multi Layered Packaging (MLP) waste and other rejected waste is disposed in dumping yard. The work undertaken by APDF will strengthen source segregation of municipal waste generated in the city and help in the waste management.

APDF has been working on the project IEC at Puttur from 1st of October, 2021 under the authority of Puttur Nagar Sabha. Four months of IEC activities are planned to encourage the public to undertake waste segregation at source.  Apart from awareness and educational activities regarding waste segregation at source, APDF is also focusing on sensitizing the public to reject the use of non-biodegradable material, adopt methods of disposing dry waste which will help in recycling, adopting sustainable living practices, methods of upcycling, encouraging composting and organic farming and also holding sessions to propagate general knowledge on waste generation and its effects.

“Unlike the larger cities, the smaller interior towns have the great advantage of generating less load and there is enormous scope for getting an effective head start through future planning. There is also a scope to decentralize waste management as citizens can be encouraged to adopt sustainable living practices and integrate waste management within their compound-house lifestyle. This is a great new blessing and learning experience for our team and we are thankful to the Puttur Nagar Sabha and the Commissioner Sri Madhu Manohar for this opportunity,” said Abdullah A. Rehman, Founder and CEO of APD Foundation.

This new project to undertake IEC programmes in Puttur has enabled APDF to broad base its expertise in improving public health system through environment conservation. While APDF is committed to bring about a change in the waste management system in cities, urban and semi urban areas, the focus firmly remains to better the lives of waste pickers’ community and improve the profile of solid waste management.
