President of India rejects mercy petition of Vamanjoor killer

Mangalore, April 5, 2013 : The  President of India has turned down the mercy petition of Praveen Kumar, the Vamanjoor killer who had eliminated four persons of a family.The mercy petitions of seven convicts from Karnataka were pending before the President.


praveen 1It was on that fateful night of February 23, 1994 that Praveen Kumar who had come to the house of a relative Appi Poojarti, had hacked Appi, her daughter Shakuntala, grand daughter Deepika and Appi’s son Govinda when they were fast asleep. The murder was for monetary gains and lure of jewellery.


The Sessions court in Mangalore had  imposed death penalty on Praveen in 2002 and even the High Court on October 28, 2003 confirmed the death sentence. But, he was languishing in the prison for the past 18 years and had even once managed to escape from police custody. 


He was re-arrested in Goa after some time when it came to light that he was pursuing his tailoring profession there, married a woman and even begot a child.
