When questioned by journalists regarding his arrest at Riyadh Airport, Dr. Rao replied that the Karnataka police are trying to obtain information from the authorities concerned in Saudi Arabia how he escaped from their custody.

Explaining the matter further, he said that the police had obtained unofficial news that he was arrested in Saudi and are currently trying to find out how he escaped from the Saudi police and arrived at Bangalore. He said that the police acted on a tip off and arrested him in Bangalore.

The media began focusing on Yusub after he murdered rowdy Candle Santhu a few years back. Ever since then, the police have launched a manhunt for Yusub. Currently, Yusub has at least 18 cases booked against him, some of them being the murder of Sukhanada Shetty, the robbery at Rajadhana Jewelers, attempting to extort money from the Bantwal-based Baliga Jewelers, and the murder of Chandrashekar Uchil. Yusub also stands accused of attempting to collect hafta from a number of prominent Mangalorean businessmen from his hideout before fleeing to Riyadh to escape arrest.

Ravi Poojary, the underworld don, had openly threatened Yusub through the media for his anti national activities. Before his reported arrest on July 13, rumors flew around that he was arrested in Chennai, however the police rubbished these rumors by stating that the criminal had spread those rumors to gain publicity.
