Nirmal Nagar Abhiyan organized to enhance awareness on clean city

Mangalore, Oct 9: The Lions and Lioness Club of Highland and Ashoknagar in collaboration with the NSS unit of Ramakrishna College organized Nirmal Nagar Abhiyan near Bunts Hostel Circle on Oct 9, Saturday.

 

DC V. Ponnuraj inaugurated the event, which comprises a march from Bunts Hostel Circle to Central Market through State Bank and Hampankatta. Speaking about the cleanliness consciousness of Mangaloreans, he said that the people of Mangalore are very particular about the cleanliness of their own houses, but don’t care about their surroundings.

The DC also said that house-to-house collection of garbage is working very well in places such as Sullia, Puttur, and Mulky; and those who refuse to cooperate will be fined and their water supply will be cut off and added that the practice ought to be implemented in Mangalore too. He also informed that the Pachanady dump yard will be converted into a scientific waste disposal site and tenders regarding the same will be called soon.

Later, while conversing with reporters, the DC said that things can be improved without banning the use of plastic bags. In Madras, plastic is being used to make crude oil, a method that has been introduced in Mysore too and will be soon introduced in Mangalore, he said.

Paura karmikas Kottaribai and Veeresh were felicitated on the occasion. Ln J. K. Rao and Dr. Gananath Shetty, the coordinator of  the NSS unit of Mangalore University, were the guests of honour.

Jeevandas Shetty, the president of Lions Club Highland, Sundar Shetty, and Pawana Shetty, the president of Lioness Club, were also present.
