Niddodi decides to take up cudgels against proposed mega thermal power project

MOODBIDRI, Feb 27, 2013: There is some sort of tension and anguish in the air in a village called Niddodi in Kallamundkur Gram Panchayat limits of Mangalore Taluk. There is a worried look on the faces of villagers ever since news was afloat that the government proposed a 4000  mw ulta mega thermal power plant in the village.

Agriculture is the main occupation of majority of people of Niddodi where 85 per cent of the land is agricultural.  Today fear is gaining ground that the proposed project if implemented would wreak havoc on the lives of the villagers and destroy greenery for ever.


It is being said that the proposed project would not only hit hard Niddodi Tenkamijar, Badagamijar and Mucharu villages but also Kallamundkur, Kateel, Kinnigoli, Edapadavu and other adjoining areas. River Nandini the lifeline of Kateel too will be contaminated.


The Mathra Bhoomi Samrakshana Horata Samithi of the village which has a previous track record of driving out mega projects including the 2011 Suvarna Corridor Project, has now once again decided to spearhead the agitation against the proposed thermal power project.


The Samithi which convened an emergency meeting at the residence of Poovappa Gowda of Nidddi resolved to fight against the project unitedly.


Joachim Koreya, Kallamundkur Gram Panchayat President, who spoke at the meetign,said the villagers will fight till the finish against the proposed project which would prove a death knell to agriculture in the village.


Several prominent citizens including ZP members Eshwar kateel, Janardhan Gowda, Action Committe Convenor and journalist Kiran Manjanbailu, Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike President Gangadhar Shetty, Niddodi Catholic Sabha President Valerian Sequeria Manjanabailu,  Alphonse D’Souza, President of Kinnigoli Catholic Sabha and representatives of various organisations attended the meeting.


Participants at the meeting,also expressed their resentment over the KIADB which has  said that it had no information regarding the project.


The Samithi members also submitted a memorandum to the Tahsildar of Moodbidri, to be forwarded to the Chief Minister urging him to drop the project,

Abhayachandra opposes Project : Meanwhile, Moodbidri MLA Abhayachandra Jain has said he came to know about the proposed project through the media and added he was strongly against any such project.
