Mangaluru, Aug 22, 2023: Not even an inch of land would be let off until the fair compensation amount is credited to the bank accounts of those whose lands have been acquired for the widening of the NH 169 from Kulshekhar to Sanoor in Karkala, said Mariamma Thomas, President of the Land Owners Action Committee.

She was addressing a nine day protest organised till August 30 in front of the office of the NH Project Officer near Tharethota in Nantoor on August 22, Tuesday.
She said the land is in government control since 2016. Though the process of providing compensation is underway since 2020, compensation has not reached the victims. The delay by the officials has led to increase in compensation from Rs 483 crores to Rs 1,113 crore. The inability to take up road works has led to traffic woes and inconveniences to the people, she said.
On the first day of the protest people from Padavu and surrounding areas took part. Mariamma Thomas said indefinite protest would be launched if the nine day protest did not yield any result. The protestors also raised slogans against NH officials and elected representatives.
On Tuesday’s protest centenarian Seetharam Shetty whose land is also being acquired took part in the protest.
