New Delhi, Mar 12, 2026: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla rejected allegations that the Leader of the Opposition was not allowed to speak in the House. Addressing the resolution moved against him, he said there was “no bias" in his actions and that he had given “adequate time" to both sides during parliamentary proceedings.
This comes as the resolution seeking Om Birla’s removal as Speaker of the Lok Sabha was defeated by a voice vote on Wednesday amid high drama.
He thanked all members who supported him or offered critical views during the debate on the resolution. Birla said he was grateful to MPs for raising concerns related to his duties, including issues about transparency.
Birla said he tries not to suspend any members of Parliament. However, he said such decisions become necessary when rules are violated.
He added that suspending Opposition members was part of his duty to maintain decorum in the House. Speaking under Rule 377, he said it pains him to make such decisions but members should also reflect on why such situations arise.
‘Chair does not control microphones’
Responding to claims that microphones of Opposition members were switched off, Birla said the Chair does not have any button to turn microphones on or off.
He explained that members can speak only when it is their turn according to the rules of the House.
Birla also referred to protests by women MPs of the Opposition. He said he acted to protect the dignity of Parliament after members stormed the treasury benches holding placards.
The Speaker said all photographs, printed material, quotes and documents must receive his approval before being tabled in Parliament.
He cliamed that the Opposition did not follow this rule, which forced him to take difficult decisions while conducting the proceedings of the House.
Birla said he remains committed to upholding the constitutional dignity of Parliament.
