Moily inaugurates newly constructed Mangala Auditorium

Mangalore, April 29: M. Veerappa Moily, the union minister for law and justice, said after inaugurating the newly constructed welcome arch, the connecting roads, and the Mangala Auditorium of Mangalore University today that expansion, pursuit of excellence, and inclusion should be the pillars of modern system of education.

Stating that India is expanding and growing very fast, he said that the country will be number one in infrastructure development in 2 more decades. He also said that Mangalore University needs to develop further in the fields of information technology, science, technological achievement, productivity, open education system, and research. He urged the university to revise its syllabi annually.

Expressing his appreciation of the Mangalore University, he said that the twin districts have become knowledge hubs because the Mangalore University inspired people to establish educational institutions and encourage students to pursue higher education.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. V. S. Acharya, the minister for higher education and pro chancellor of the university, said that steps have been taken to increase the gross enrollment ratio of higher education in Karnataka up to 20 percent. Regarding the knowledge commission, which was formed to enhance the quality of higher education in the state, he said that the commission has done a good job in collaboration with academicians and experts. Around Rs. 12,200 crore has been invested in the field of education, he added and urged students to be catalysts of growth and harmony in the society after getting their degrees.

Delivering the presidential address, Vice Chancellor Prof. T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, spoke about the various achievements of Mangalore University in research and infrastructure. He said that Mangalore University ranks second in chemical science research and number one in international collaboration, adding that the university has been placed in the 24th place in a list of top 50 Indian universities based on publication output, share of international collaborative papers, and H-Index by the Indian Journal of Science and Technology. He also said that the university’s plans for the future include a full-fledged cyber café, examination halls, and outdoor auditorium for sports.

Registrar (evaluation) Prof. K. Chinnappa Gowda delivered the introductory address. The new Mangala Auditorium has been constructed at the cost of Rs. 11 crore and has an area of 3,045sq.m. The new building has an excellent architectural design with Corinthian style capitals and timber, 26 pillars, and a seating capacity of 1000.

The 29th annual convocation of Mangalore University will be held on April 30, Saturday in Mangala Auditorium for the first time. The earlier convocations were held in science block quadrangle.
