Ministry planning to boost tourism sector along coastal areas – Sahay

Mangalore, Sep 16, 2012: Subodh Kant Sahay, union minister for tourism, announced that the tourism ministry is making plans to develop infrastructure along an 8000-km coastal stretch in a bid to make the coastal areas more attractive to tourists. 


Addressing the gathering after inaugurating information centres at Jungle Lodges and Resorts Limited and Kerala Tourism Information at Mangalore Airport on September 15, Saturday, the minister said that coastal states have been directed to submit reports proposing tourism projects along the coast.

Stating that the centre expects to receive the reports from the states within one month, he said that initiatives will soon be taken to implement various tourism projects in coastal regions. As many as 25 tourism projects have been planned for Karnataka under the special mega tourism project, and Rs. 50 crore has been earmarked for the same, he added. 


Opining that the economy of Mangalore will be boosted because Mangalore is a transit centre for Kerala and Karnataka, he said that the tourism ministry is planning entertainment parks, tourism parks, and cultural activity centres in Mangalore. These projects are expected to general 78 jobs per Rs. 10 lakh invested, he added. 


Anand Singh, state minister for tourism, and Latha Krishna Rao, principal secretary, were also present.
