Mangalore, Apr 17, 2012 : The Mescom Non Permanent Workers’ Association organized a protest in front of the company’s head office near AB Shetty Circle on April 17 Tuesday, demanding that temporary categorized workers must be given the status of permanent workers and that the system of hiring workers on contract basis must be stopped.
The protestors also demanded facilities such as job permanency, minimum salary of Rs. 10,000 payable on the first day of every month, employment card and pay slip, provident fund and bonus, paid leave once in 20 days, and so on.
Mescom has hired a number of security guards, operators, bill collectors, watchmen, computer operators, and others on a contract basis.
Shivakumar, the president of the association, said on the occasion that the system of hiring workers on contract basis has been abolished by the Contract Labour Regulation and Abolition Act of 1970, in spite of which neither the central government nor the state government has decided on how to implement it.
