Mangaluru cooker blast case: Mohammed Shariq sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment

Bengaluru, Apr 28, 2026: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court on Monday sentenced Mohammed Shariq, the prime accused in the Mangaluru cooker bomb blast case, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment after he admitted to the crime.

The court found Shariq guilty under Section 121A (conspiracy to commit offences against the state) and Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC, along with various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The case relates to the November 19, 2022 incident, when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) hidden inside a pressure cooker accidentally exploded in a moving autorickshaw near Kankanady in Mangaluru. Shariq, who was carrying the bomb, and the autorickshaw driver were both injured in the blast.

Investigators said the accidental explosion prevented a much larger tragedy that was allegedly planned in the city.

Considering the seriousness of the terror-related offence, the case was handed over to the NIA, which later filed a chargesheet against him in 2024.

During the trial, Shariq filed a plea admitting to the charges and expressed remorse for his actions. Taking the gravity of the offence into account, the special court awarded him 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on Monday.
