Mangaluru: Massive landslide at Permanki cuts off roads, damages homes and plantations

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Jul 22, 2025: A massive landslide triggered by continuous rainfall has occurred at Kaiguri in Permanki near Ulayibettu, on the outskirts of Mangaluru. The incident, reminiscent of the recent Kettikal highway landslide, has caused the complete collapse of the tar road connecting Ulayibettu to Permai Church. As a result, residents are now forced to take a long detour via Malluru to reach Mangaluru.

Around four feet of the road has caved in, and soil has slid along a one-kilometre stretch, damaging several homes and plantations. Arecanut and coconut trees have been severely affected, some bending under the weight of the displaced soil. The landslide, which began on Sunday, intensified on Monday, leading to more destruction in nearby farmlands. Locals report that no debris removal has been initiated yet.

Another road connecting Permanki Padavi to Palikatte and Malluru Uddabettu has also collapsed, cutting off access to hundreds of homes and forcing residents to rely on alternate routes. A house belonging to a local resident, Yehuzhe, has developed deep cracks and is now uninhabitable. The family has moved to a relative’s house in Vamanjoor.

Permanki, situated at a higher altitude, has several streams and rivulets flowing downhill towards Kaiguri. The landslide has disrupted the natural flow of these water bodies, creating temporary waterfalls and flooding nearby areas. Soil that slid into the streams has diverted water into surrounding lands. Experts believe that the presence of red laterite rocks and persistent waterlogging may have destabilized the lower layers of soil, leading to the collapse — a subject that requires further study.

Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Mahesh Kumar, who visited the site, confirmed that a detailed report would be submitted to the deputy commissioner through the tahsildar. He acknowledged the extensive damage caused by the incident. Ulayibettu PDO Anita Katyayani also inspected the area and confirmed that displaced residents have been relocated to safer locations. However, she stressed that relief work cannot commence until the rain subsides, and noted that the situation requires intervention from the district administration, as it is beyond the scope of the gram panchayat.
