Mangalore, Feb 24, 2013: Three eminent achievers namely Dr Kadri Gopalnathan, the renowned saxophone artiste, Dr Chandrashekhar Kambara, eminent writer and folk scholar and AB Subbaiah, the famed hockey player from Coorg, were conferred the honorary doctorates of Mangalore University at its 31st convocation held on February 23, Saturday. State Governor and University Chancellor HR Bharadwaj, conferred the honorary doctorates.
Dr T Ramaswamy, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, who delivered the convocation address on the topic- ‘Education: For India of the Future’ urged educationists and policy makers to frame educational polices and approaches based on hands on approach. He said the present generation which was born after the economic liberalization was initiated in 1991 was the next best generation of India. He pointed out that the gross enrolment ratio in higher education in India was below global averages, despite being on an upward trend. He also stated that the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education has doubled in the past ten years and added it may reach global standards within the next few years.
A total of 84 Ph.D degrees (Science-59), Commerce -8, Arts-15, Education -2) and 7 M.Phil degrees were conferred. As many as 36 gold medals and 55 cash prizes were awarded. A total of 60 ranks in various disciplines were conferred.
Prof TC Shivashankeramurthi, Vice chancellor of Mangalore University, was among others present on the occasion.
