Amitha is the first and only person from her village Kudumbur near Baikampady to represent the country in an international championship. A student of arts, Amitha is training in the 52-kg weight category.

Deepa, a B.Com. student, said that she was encouraged by her coaches in college. She has also won a wrestling match in Mysore, but says she is more comfortable with power lifting. She won the first prize in the 47kg category of the national power lifting championship in Himachal Pradesh, organized from March 25 to April 2 by the Indian Power Lifting Federation.
