Mangalore, March 15, 2013: Deputy Commissioner N Prakash has urged youth to develop a greater awareness about consumer rights.He was speaking after inaugurating World Consumer Day programme organized at the Ravindra Kala Bhavan of University College on March 15, Friday.


The programme was held under the joint aegis of the district administration and the DK District Federation of Consumer Organisations. Expressing concern over the fact that the awareness on consumer rights in the district was not satisfactory, the DC said every day consumer rights are violated in various ways and the same ignored by the people.

Regional Transport Officer C Mallikarjuna, who was present as a chief guest, said the RTO will take steps to see that all buses had ticket issuing machines by next year. On the problem of loud honking of buses, he said the RTO has already taken the initiative to replace the loud horns of some buses and added steps would be taken to replace all the loud horns very soon.


M G Salian, President, DK District Federation of Consumer Organizations, said that most of the consumers were unwilling to fight when it comes to violation of consumer rights and added an increased awareness will help prevent exploitation of consumers. He also informed that there were as many as 56 consumer clubs in schools of the district.


Consumer Education Awards were presented to schools which have done significant works aimed at creating consumer awareness.Dr Lakshminarayana Bhatta, Principal of University College, Sharana Basappa, Deputy Director of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies and several others were present on the occasion.
