Karnataka: Mild 3.5-magnitude earthquake jolts Vijayapura district

Vijayapura, September 30, 2026: A mild earthquake of magnitude 3.5 was recorded in Vijayapura district in the early hours of Wednesday, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

The tremor occurred at 2.04 am at a depth of 10 km, with the epicentre located 3.9 km northeast of Basavana Bagewadi, at latitude 16.604°N and longitude 75.990°E.

According to the KSNDMC, the seismic intensity was low, though the tremor could be felt within a radius of around 50 to 60 km from the epicentre.

The epicentre was located 7.8 km west of Hunashyal Gram Panchayat, 11.2 km west of Huvina Hipparagi GP, 31 km northeast of Almatti Dam and 38 km southwest of Vijayapura city.

The KSNDMC said the earthquake was unlikely to cause any harm to the local community due to its low intensity, although local vibrations could be felt.

The epicentre falls under Seismic Zone III, and the region is reportedly free of major structural discontinuities, according to the tectonic map.

The KSNDMC director advised residents not to panic, noting that both the magnitude and intensity of the earthquake were low.
