Mangalore: Portion of under construction building collapses over compound wall of house

Mangalore, May 31, 2013: The decision of the owner of a house at Bajjodi-Bikarnakatte  to go in for construction of an additional room sans pillars, proved too costly when  a portion of the building gave way and collapsed over the compound wall and gate of another house located on a lower level on May 30, Thursday.

Santosh D’Costa  who is settled in England, had decided to expand his residential cum commercial building named ‘Maria Kripa’ by another room. It is learnt, neighbours had warned against going ahead with the construction without pillars. Sources said after almost a month after construction commenced, the loosened mud due to rain resulted in the collapse of the building along with the metal sheet. However no one was hurt in the incident.

Lawrence Saldanha whose gate and compound wall collapsed has decided to lodge a police complaint.  The collapse of the portion of the house even snapped an electricity cable. MESCOM staff later arrived and repaired the cable.
