Mangalore, Jan 3, 2013: The hazards posed by mobile towers located in close proximity to residential areas, came up for discussion at the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat meeting held on January 3, Thursday.
Speaking at the meeting, District Health Officer OR Srirangappa said there have been complaints of mental illness and cancer from people living close by mobile towers in four taluks of the district.
Earlier, raising the issue, ZP member Santosh Kumar Rai pointed out how in some places a single tower accommodated various mobile companies in turn increasing risks of high radiation.
The DHO said a survey is conducted to study the health impact of mobile tower radiation in people living within a radius of 500 meters from the towers. The report is not yet complete and survey in Mangalore taluk is yet to be done, he added. Once the survey is complete, a detailed report will be submitted, he added.
MLA UT Khader who also spoke, urged for early measures to construct houses for Koragas by getting sanctioned funds from the Centre. He also said details must be sought from corporate companies regarding the amount spent by them on corporate social responsibilities.
Some opposition members wanted to know why the Hirebandadi GP was dissolved when even the High Court has expressed its displeasure over the action. However, the ZP chief Koragappa Naik refused to comment on the issue.
