Mangalore, June 1, 2012: The DK District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited observed World Milk Day at Kulshekar on June 4, Tuesday.
Dr O R Srirangappa, District Health Officer, who was the chief guest, said that milk is essential for human beings and helps in fighting calcium deficiency. The Health Officer also called upon dairy farmers to vaccinate their cattle without fail as this would prevent harmful bacteria from entering human bodies upon consumption of milk.
Dairy farmers supplying milk to the Union must also maintain cleanliness, the officer said and urged them to prevent using water which has been kept open thereby allowing breeding of mosquitoes.
Delivering the presidential address, Raviraj Hegde, President of the Union, India which stood 16th as far as milk production is concerned, has jumped to the first place and added 17% of milk is supplied from India.
He said around 47000 farmers were supplying milk to the Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union. The Union collects milk from 648 unions and supplies 3,30,000 liters to more than 2 lakh customers, he informed. The union vaccinates all the cows of the dairy farmers which provide milk, he said adding that the cattle were also treated by 16 veterinary doctors. The union also pasteurizes the milk before supplying it to the consumers for use, he said.
Outstanding Nandini Milk dealers and distributors were felicitated on the occasion.
