Mangalore, April 30: Delivering the convocation address at the 29th annual convocation of Mangalore University held for the first time in the newly constructed Mangala Auditorium in the university campus, M. N. Venkatachalaiah, the former chief justice of the Supreme Court of India, said that the need to encourage young scientists in universities is great and that this is possible only if society respects scientific research.

 

 

 

 

He further said that science and technology provides the younger generation with exciting new worlds and market places for ideas, adding that science and technology can completely change the world for the better. All industrial progress requires science and technology, he added.


Venkatachalaiah also informed that India ranks third in the world for availability of scientists, fourth for domestic market size, and fifth for foreign market size. He added that the global competitiveness report places India in the 50th position in overall global competitiveness. He also spoke of the importance of striking a balance between economic progress and human welfare.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Governor Hans Raj Bharadwaj, who is also the chancellor of the university, conferred the honorary doctorates on Bannanje Govindacharya, the Sanskrit scholar; D. K. Chowta, the Tulu writer; and Ajai Kumar Singh, the former director general and inspector general of police.


The Mangalore University awarded 70 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 31 gold medals, and 56 cash prizes. 13,833 of the 21,415 candidates who answered the 2009 – 10 examinations had passed and 64.4 percent of those who had passed were women.


Vice Chancellor Prof. T. C. Shivashankar Murthy delivered the welcome and introductory address. Higher Education Minister Dr. V. S. Acharya and Registrar (evaluation) Prof. K. Chinnappa Gowda were also present.
