mcc 2022 nov 27Mangalore, Nov 27, 2011: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has finally chosen 2 companies for its 3-package solid waste management project. However, this project can be implemented only with the approval of the state government and the corporation council.

MCC sources say that one company will collect solid waste from all the wards and transport it to Pachchanady while the other will maintain a sanitary landfill site and compost plant.

The MCC council will have to first approve the selection of these two companies at the council meeting, scheduled to be held on Nov 29. If the council gives its nod, the proposal will be submitted to the state government for approval, said MCC sources.

According to sources, the Mumbai-based Anthony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd. has been selected to collect waste from all the 60 wards in two packages and to take it to Pachchanady. The Delhi-based IL&FS Environmental Infrastructure and Services Ltd. has been selected to maintain and operate the sanitary landfill and compost plant.

Anthony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd. has quoted Rs. 3,201 to collect and transport a ton of solid waste from the north zone, which has 29 wards and Rs. 2,051 to collect and transport a ton of solid waste from the south zone, which has 31 wards. IL&FS has quoted Rs. 238 per ton of waste handled at the sanitary landfill and compost plant.
Meanwhile, the MCC was collecting solid waste management cess as part of property tax for 2011 – 12 although the waste management project was pending. Mayor Praveen has announced at a council meeting that if the project is not implemented this year, the cess would be adjusted while collecting property tax for 2012 – 13.

According to MCC sources, the project includes compulsory installation of GPS in vehicles moving solid waste to the Pachanady dumping yard. The companies will have to collect waste from door to door, remove weeds, sweep streets, and clean road dividers. Besides, it includes compulsory cleaning of beaches at Mukka, Suratkala, Kasba Bengre, and Tannirbhavi.
