Mangaluru, Feb 11, 2026: The Mangaluru City Corporation has announced a 3 per cent increase in property tax, which will come into effect from the next financial year.
The decision was taken at the Corporation’s monthly council meeting held on February 9. Officials said the move was in line with government guidelines that mandate periodic revision of taxes based on prevailing market values of properties.
It was clarified during the meeting that the revision is an administrative measure aimed at boosting the Corporation’s revenue to support the city’s development projects. Council members discussed that the tax hike was necessary to maintain and improve civic amenities across the city’s 60 wards.
Opposition members strongly objected to the timing of the increase, arguing that it would place an additional financial burden on the general public. They urged the administration to strengthen the tax collection mechanism and improve efficiency instead of raising tax rates.
Despite the opposition, the proposal to increase the property tax was approved. As a result, property owners within Mangaluru city limits will be required to pay tax at the revised rates from April 1, 2026.
