Udupi, Aug 27, 2012 : District-in-charge Minister Kota Shrinivas Poojary inaugurated South India’s second hi-tech fish market at Padubidri on August 26, Sunday.
Delivering the inaugural address, he announced loans with 3% rates for fisherwomen with maximum loans in the range of Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000. Making a list of welfare schemes launched by central and state governments for women, he said that each fisherwoman will receive a heat-resistant box worth Rs. 5,000.
Speaking on the occasion, MP Jayaprakash Hegde stressed the importance of keeping the market clean. Revealing details regarding government funds, he said that the central government contributes 90% and the state government contributes 10% for each government project. The authorities concerned must, therefore, write a detailed letter along with estimated cost and budget to get funds from the central government for the construction of a port near Hejamadi.
A total of Rs. 76.92 lakhs was spent on constructing this arch-shaped market, which is one of the 10 projects launched by Coastal Development Authority of Mangalore with the support of the National Fisheries Development Board of Hyderabad and the Government of Karnataka.
Hi-tech fish markets will also be built in places such as Katpady, Kaup, Uppunda, Sasthana, and Byndoor (Udupi district); Shirali, Karwar, and Ankola (Uttara Kannada district); and Bantwal (DK district). These hi-tech markets include facilities such as rest rooms, dressing rooms, toilets, dining rooms, bathrooms, and individual cabins for each fisherwoman.

Nagaraj Shetty, former president of the Coastal Development Authority (CDA), and Dr. C. K. Moorthy, executive director of NFDC, were felicitated as they played an active role in the construction of this market.
Among those present were Katpady ZP President Shankar Poojary, TP President Devdas Hebbar, Karnataka Fisheries Development Board President Nithin Kumar, District Cooperative Fisheries Federation President Yashpal Suvarna, and others.
