Konkan Railway’s RORO Scheme has been successful – N. N. Talan

Mangalore, July 24, 2012 : Addressing reporters at a press conference held at the railway quarters, Deputy Chief Commercial Manager N. N. Talan said that the Konkan Railway’s Roll On Roll Off (RORO) Scheme, which was launched on Jan 26, 1999, has made it possible to carry loaded trucks directly on railway wagons.

Further, he said that trucks are accompanied by drivers and co-drivers and are required to pass a height gauge to adjudge its height before it can be carried on the RORO train. This reduces expenses on diesel, wear on tyres, and maintenance of trucks and makes sure that they are delivered intact while simultaneously removing road risk factors and eliminating the need for multiple handling. At the national level, this service helps conserve fuel, decongest national highways, and reduce pollution.

He also pointed out that transporters are unwilling to change from the existing mode of transport to the railways because of intermediate handling of consignment, cost factor, and operation on credit.

Stating that RORO is the solution, he said that the transport industry has a general view that the railways, being a fuel efficient system, must provide better solutions. RORO, which was launched on an experimental basis by Konkan Railway, has now become a successful mode of transport, which addresses all the problems faced by the transport industry.

Speaking about the benefits of RORO, he said that it requires no depot or shed; besides, loading and unloading is done in just 2 hours. The RORO train moves at a speed of 40kmph, increasing the owner’s fleet turnaround and reducing claim liability for the railways, he added.

Sunil Narkar and Baban Gate were also present.
