Kaup, March 14, 2013 : Tension gripped Kaup on the evening of March 13, Wednesday, when two Hindu boys were dragged out of a bus and beaten up by a group reportedly belonging to the minority community for speaking to a girl of another community.
The incident triggered tension when members of Hindu outfits gathered in large numbers and picketed the Kaup police station demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
It has been learnt that the incident took place when Srinath and Rajesh, both students of a college in Katipalla were on way to way to Mangalore from Manipal with three of their female class mates. Sources said two of the girls were Muslims while the third one was a Hindu girl. They were returning after reportedly visiting Rajathadri in Manipal.
Some youth belonging to the minority community who noticed them in the bus informed others and when the bus reached near the Vidyaniketan institute the boys were beaten up and the girls warned.
Bhajrangdal activists later staged a protest in front of the Kaup police and demanded action against the perpetrators of the attack.
Udupi SP Dr Boralingaiah has said that a case has been registered. No arrests have been made so far.
