Mangaluru, Apr 22, 2026: The annual fair at Kateel witnessed the thrilling and traditional ‘Thootedara’ Agni Keli (fire-play), drawing thousands of devotees as part of the Sri Durga Parameshwari Jatra Mahotsava.

Kateel, a renowned pilgrimage centre in Dakshina Kannada district, came alive with religious fervour as the unique ritual unfolded on the final day of the festival. The ‘Thootedara’ is performed as a form of offering, where devotees hurl burning palm frond torches at each other in a dramatic display believed to please Goddess Durga Parameshwari. The centuries-old tradition continues to be passed down through generations.

A distinctive feature of this ritual is that it is performed exclusively by devotees from Attur and Kodettur villages, symbolising a deep-rooted cultural heritage of Tulunadu. No outsiders are allowed to participate.

Participants observe strict vows from the day of flag hoisting, abstaining from alcohol and non-vegetarian food. On the day of Agni Keli, they wear traditional attire, take a holy dip at Jalakada Katte near Ajekar, and gather at the Rakteshwari shrine before dividing into two groups to begin the ritual.

The fire-play takes place in three rounds, during which devotees from the two villages, though otherwise friendly, engage in a fierce yet symbolic exchange of burning torches. The spectacle later shifts to the temple chariot street, creating an intense and electrifying atmosphere. Elders of the villages closely monitor the event to ensure it remains under control.

The ritual is also rooted in mythology, symbolising the welcoming of the Goddess with fire after her victory over the demon Arunasura.

Participants are provided kumkum and flowers by the temple, which they apply and wear as part of the ritual. Despite the apparent risks, devotees believe that no major mishaps have occurred so far due to divine protection.

This year too, thousands of devotees and visitors from far and wide gathered to witness the awe-inspiring event, making it one of the main highlights of the jatra, marked by devotion, tradition, and sheer spectacle.
