Karnataka limits PUC result improvement attempts to two years

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, March 15, 2026: The Karnataka government has revised the rules allowing Pre-University Course (PUC) students to improve their examination results, restricting the improvement window to two years.

According to a new order issued by the Education Department, students can now attempt to improve their marks only in the year they register for the examination and in the following academic year. The rule applies to all categories of candidates, including regular students, private candidates and repeaters across the state.

During this period, students will be allowed to appear for up to three annual examinations in a single academic year to improve their scores. If they wish to continue attempting improvement, they must do so within the three annual examinations conducted in the next academic year. No further opportunities will be provided after the two-year period.

Earlier, students had the flexibility to attempt improvement over a longer duration. However, the government has now restricted the timeframe due to administrative and technical challenges faced by examination authorities.

Officials said colleges are required to upload detailed student data every year through the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board portal, including records of candidates who passed in previous years and subject-wise details. Maintaining such data for an indefinite period has been creating technical complications.

In addition, fresh marks cards must be issued when students who had earlier failed later pass after improvement attempts, while the old marks cards must be collected and returned to the board. Managing these repeated revisions has made the process increasingly complex.

The government said the two-year limit has been introduced to streamline record management and reduce administrative difficulties in handling examination data and marks cards.
