Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 14, 2012: The Kannada Sahitya Parishad, DK district unit, held a campaign to collect opinions regarding education today.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president of the DK unit of the parishad, said that the popularity of English medium schools and the advent of ICSE and CBSE schools have been killing Kannada. While admitting that nothing can be done about the prominence of English, he urged that Kannada must also be taught right from the KG level and exams must be conducted.

He also demanded to know why the government is not giving any grants to Kannada medium schools.

Speaking on the occasion, Aerya Lakshminarayan Alva said that Bantwal taluk has 819 villages, but only four government degree colleges although the government claims that there are 9 degree colleges. Voicing his opinion of government schools, he said that they lack the facilities available in private schools. Although the government has started English medium schools, there are no qualified teachers to teach students in English, he said.

A number of thinkers and litterateurs such as Sunder Rai and Taltaje Vasanth Kumar were also present.
