Mangalore Sep 26: Several educational, medical, and other institutions observed World Heart Day in a meaningful manner on September 26, Sunday.

NITTE K. S. Hegde Medical College (KSHEMA), Deralakatte organized a marathon from Pumpwell to IMA Hall on observance of World Heart Day 2010. 


Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh flagged off the run in the presence of Vinay Hegde, the chancellor of NITTE University, and Dr. M. Shantaram Shetty, the orthopedic surgeon. The runners enhanced public awareness through slogans and banners.

KMC Hospital also organized the World Heart Day Run 2010 from KMC, Bejai to KMC Hospital, Ambedkar Circle through Lalbagh, MG Road, PVS Circle, and Bunts Hostel Circle. Mr. Mahesh Inder, the COO of KMC Hospital, Mangalore, welcomed the dignitaries, after which District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated the run and spoke about the importance of science and technology, owing to which people can understand various medical disorders and get them treatment unlike the olden days when cardiac arrest was believed to be the work of evil spirits.

In his speech, MLA Yogish Bhat said that a healthy heart is the key to healthy life. Stating that heart disease is one of the biggest killers worldwide, he said that we only need to make a few changes in our lifestyle in order to avoid it.

Stating that KMC provides excellent health care in Mangalore, Bangalore, and Manipal, cardiologist Dr. Narasimha Pai advised people to eat well and exercise regularly for a healthy heart. He also spoke of the importance of regular health check ups.

MLA Mallika Prasad Puttur felicitated Mrs. Mary Hilda with a shawl, garland, memento, and fruits. After receiving the felicitation, Mrs. Mary Hilda said that the heart is the hardest working muscle in the human body, owing to which we must take good care of it. She warned that daily activities, stress, cholesterol, fast foods, and others can have an adverse effect on the heart. Expressing her gratefulness to KMC for inviting her, she congratulated the hospital for organizing this event.

Prizes were distributed among winners of various competitions such as drawing, best placard, best slogan, best institution participation, oldest participant, and youngest participant. Dr.Padmanabha Kamath proposed the vote of thanks; and Ms. Supriya Hegde compered the event.

The marathon torch was lit by athlete Hilda in the presence of Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and Dean of KMC Retired Major General Raj Gopal. More than 1000 people, including medical students and school children with their parents, participated in the heart run.
