KRRS members lay siege to MESCOM MD’s office against erratic power cuts

Mangalore, Apr 8, 2013: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha members staged protest against MESCOM in front of its office at A B Shetty circle on April 8, Monday to condemn the  frequent power cuts in twin districts.

Addressing the protestors, Vijay Hegde, State Vice-President of the Sangha, said the people of the coastal region were suffering from frequent power cuts ever since  power generated from Jog Falls and UPCL is diverted to places like Bangalore and Hassan.

The students from the coastal districts are hit  hard due to the undue bias of the Electricity Department which was more keen on supplying power to Bangalore, he said. Are the students of the coastal districts in any way inferior to the students of Bangalore, as far as education is concerned ? he further questioned.

The MESCOM Vigilance Squad SP Ravi Narayan though tried to interact with the protestors, the latter adopted an adamant stand that would only talk to the MESCOM MD Sumanth.

After much heated argument, the MESCOM MD finally came down to meet the representatives of the farmers and hear their woes. The interaction lasted for over 45 minutes.

The farmers complained to the MD that the MESCOM Uppinangady engineer Sheshappa Poojary had removed their pump sets and even imprisoned one of the members of the Sangha  on the false complaint of assaulting him. The farmers also set a 24  hour ultimatum  to investigate the case  and threatened to intensify their protest on April 9.

In response, MESCOM  MD Sumanth said that the officials will conduct an enquiry into the matter and take strict action against anyone found guilty.

Later, the representatives of the Sangha submitted a memorandum to Sumanth enlisting their demands. The MESCOM MD has assured to consider the demands.
