Mangalore, Mar 2, 2013: KJP State Secretary Ramachandra Baikampady has said that fishermen must strongly oppose the Karnataka government’s plans of setting up an Ultra Mega Power Plant (UMPP) at Niddodi village in Dakshina Kannada district.

Speaking at the press meet held at Press Club on March 2, Saturday, he  said the proposed 4000 mw project would not only need acquisition of 4000 acres of agricultural land, but would also cause extensive pollution of land, water and air in the district.

Ramachandra Baikampady accused the CM of sending the proposal to the Centre without taking into confidence political parties and leaders in the district.

The existing Nandikur coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) at Yellur in Udupi district has already caused enough pollution of water resources while also landing fishermen in hardship, he observed. As the proposed plant at Niddodi is three times bigger than the Nandikur Power plant,  it will have to depend more on river water and was all likely to release its toxic effluents to the river, thereby polluting it to a great extent, Ramachandra Baikampady further added.

He urged the government to drop the proposed ultra mega power project at Niddodi which would put the lives of several fishermen in distress.
