Mangalore, Dec 29, 2011: The people of Kasaba Bengre organized a protest against the fishmeal unit, which is to be established on a playground, under the leadership of the DK JD(S) labour division on Dec 29, Thursday.
Mohammed Rafi, the president of the JD(S) labour division, said in his protest address that Kasaba Bengre has a population of around 10,000 people, who are opposing the Department of Ports’ move to set up a fishmeal unit in the area against the wish of the local people.
Further, he said that the proposed site for the fishmeal unit is a playground, which is being used by the local youth. He also pointed out that the fishmeal unit, if set up, will pollute the surroundings.
Warning that the people of the area will not permit the setting up of the factory, which is hazardous to the environment, he said that they will stage a violent protest if the project is not cancelled.
Vasanth Poojary, Vittal Bhandary Harekala, Bashir, Rajendra Shetty, Choodamani, Siddiq, and many others were also present.
