Mangalore, Jan 22, 2014: Capt Ganesh Karnik, MLC has said that the BJP strongly opposed the state government moves to lay the foundation for the Yettinahole Project.
Addressing press persons at the District BJP office on January 21, Tuesday he said the project had not received a green signal from any of the authorities including the Union Environment Ministry, Forest Department, Railway Department and Highway Department. Neither is the tender process complete and the moves of the government to go ahead with this technically unfeasible project solely with an eye on Lok Sabha elections, is not acceptable, he said.

It is nothing but ridiculous on the part of the government to go in for a river diversion project to feed the water starved districts when it has not been able to solve the water problem in the coastal region, Capt Karnik said. He also said politics was evident behind the hastiness of the state government to lay foundation for this project.
He said he would raise the issue in the State Assembly session which begins on January 22 and added that he would emphasise the need to find alternate ways to solve the problems rather than going in for such a project.
Continuing, Capt Karnik said the ploy to use the Yettinahole water for industrial purposes stands exposed with the Karnataka Irrigation Corporation sending a proposal to the government seeking approval to use 1.00 TMC water for Devanahalli Industrial area in Bangalore rural district.
He questioned how far is it right to implement such a project which would require thousands of crores of rupees and in turn would destroy livelihood in the coastal region.
