Hijab row at Ramakunjeshwar College comes to an end

Mangalore, July 24, 2012 : The protest launched by the Muslim students of Ramakunjeshwara First Grade College in Puttur finally came to an end after 12 days with a large number of protestors returning to the classroom.

 

Although 107 students began the protest, only 15 boys were left protesting at the end of 12 days. The students were protesting against the ban on hijab imposed by the college. The college authorities made students who returned to their classes sign an agreement that they would never take part in protests against the college in future and that they would accept that headscarves are banned in the college premises.

One of the protestors said that students finally decided to return to their classes because loss of attendance had begun worrying them. Moreover, the college filed cases against seven protestors on Saturday.

Principal Vasanth Rao lodged a complaint that 80 students belonging to the college joined students from other colleges and organized a protest in front of the college under the banner of the University Sarva College Sangha on Friday.

Not all students, however, have signed the agreement. Calling it a blackmail tactic, one of the students said that the college has filed false charges and says that it will withdraw the cases only if the students return to their classrooms.

The college management said that it was forced to file cases because the protestors had created an atmosphere of tension and fear in the college.
