Mangalore, Jan 28, 2014: A new handbook detailing photographic records of birds spotted at the Nitte University campus in Deralakatte, is being released this week. The atlas containing full-page snapshots of 86 species of birds has been authored by Dr. Arunachalam Kumar and Shivashankar M.

The hand-guide, ‘Birds of Nitte University Campus’ (ISBN 978-81-908028-8-8) has been partly funded by a grant from the Nitte University. The book  makes it simple for the novice birdwatchers to pick up the rudiments of the hobby.  Identification of species has been made easy through full page close-up colour photographs of all birds in the campus.

Dr Arunachalam Kumar book on Birds of Nitte University Campus


Dr. Arunachalam Kumar is a noted naturalist with over three decades of filed experience in wildlife biology. He is  the first to checklist city birds of Mangalore way back in the eighties. He has authored two books and over three hundred observation notes. Dr. Kumar is recipient of the Dr. T.M.A. Pai Gold Medal in 1983 for his original research into embryology of birds. He has also been awarded the S. A. Husain Memorial ‘Conservationist of the Year’ recognition a couple of years ago.

Shivashankar, a computer engineer is a postgraduate in embedded systems, is a world renown nature photographer  whose bird pictures have been reproduced in a number of publications and compilations. He has also co-authored a reference book on birds of coastal Karnataka
