Mangalore, Oct 25, 2013 : State Labour Minister Parameshwar Naik has said that the Department of Labour with the co-operation of elected representatives will soon launch a campaign across the district in order to register the names of construction workers with a view to ensure security to them.

Speaking to reporters at the DC office on October 24, Thursday he said until September, only 23,334 construction workers have registered their names in the district and added the workers and the employers were not co-operative. The Department is now geared up to take steps towards enrollment of more number of workers, he said.
Speaking on the importance of registration,he said so far 2203 workers have secured a compensation of Rs 79.90 lakhs from the Building and other Construction Workers Welfare Board. The registered workers can also avail benefits from various schemes of the government, he added.
He said there were also plans to open residential schools for children of construction workers and added five such schools will be opened in different parts of the state from the next acadmeic year. Residential quarters will also come up for workers in 11 City Corporation limits of the state, he informed.
