Mangalore, Dec 7, 2012: The Food Conservation Campaign Committee formed with the motto of spreading awareness in the society regarding the wastage of food at public and private functions, will  be launching a  campaign in all districts of the state, in order to sensitize the public on this vital issue.

Speaking to media men at Press Club in Mangalore on December 7, Friday, NK Mohan Kumar, Convener of the Committee  said  he struck upon the idea of launching the campaign when he saw  two women discarding sumptuous food  left over   by people at  a wedding ceremony, at a time when many in this nation were starving. He said he had already launched an awareness campaign  in Kushalnagar of Coorg District, with the theme ‘We have the Right to eat but not to throw it’. A  food security jatha  too was  been organized and   around 20,000 school and college students   participated in the  essay and elocution competition  conducted  in Kodagu district, he said.

Mohan  further informed that he  has also distributed  handouts and put up  banners and flex boards close by public function venues, educational institutions and other places. Similar campaigns have also been organized at pilgrim centres like Horanadu, Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala, he said adding even Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade had encouraged him by appreciating his campaign.

Pointing out that the Madikeri and Davangere Zilla Panchayats have enforced a rule  against wastage of food, he said the issue has  however been neglected across the country.

Stating that his campaign aimed at preventing wastage of food in the state, he said he  will be visiting every district to  dissuade people from wasting food  and thereby help  in food conservation.
