Fishing boats collide off Malpe coast: All fishermen rescued

Udupi, May 19, 2024: Two boats that went deep-sea fishing from Malpe fishing port collided at sea. One boat sank, but all five fishermen on board were rescued by the crew of the other boat.

The boat Maltidevi 11, owned by Gopala Suvarna of Vadabandeshwara, set out for deep-sea fishing on the night of May 16 from Malpe port. While fishing approximately 12 nautical miles off Bhatkal early on the morning of May 17, the Maltidevi 11 was struck by the Durga Boat due to poor visibility. The collision broke a plank on the Maltidevi 11, causing water to seep in, and it sank within an hour.

Fishermen Tandela Suresh Kundar, Kalasis Shankar Kundar, Shankara Poojary, Yogendra, and Abdul Ghani Sheikh of the Maltidevi 11 were rescued by the crews of the Durga Boat and the Panchajanya Boat.

Efforts were made to tow the Maltidevi 11 to Gangolli port by tying it with ropes. However, the ropes snapped about eight nautical miles from the port, causing the boat to sink almost completely. Approximately 2,500 liters of diesel, a trawl net, an engine, and other equipment valued at around Rs 20 lakh were lost.
