Chikmagalur, Karnataka, Dec 17 : Ramachandran, a resident of Sulia Aletty, Dakshina Kannada district, slashed his 23-year-old daughter Mamata’s throat inside the police station on Dec 12 (Sunday) and in the presence of horrified policeman after she refused his appeal not to marry a 25-year-old Muslim lover.
Ramachandran then tried to slash his wrists in an attempted suicide, but was overpowered by police.

Mamata, a nurse working in Narayana Heart Hospital in Bangalore fell in love with a youth Moinuddin, working in Dubai, who had come to the hospital for his mother’s treatment.
Mamata wanted to marry Moinuddin, and while the boy’s family was willing for the marriage, Mamata’s father opposed it. The two families met several times but the matter could not be sorted out.
Meanwhile, Mamata sneaked out to Chikmagalur and stayed with a relative. She began making arrangements for her wedding with Moinuddin on Dec 13, but her father meanwhile went to the police.
The SHO of Basavanhalli called both Mamata and Moinuddin to the police station on Dec 12 night. Mamata’s father reached the police station the next morning and spent almost the entire day persuading Mamata not to marry, but the girl stood her ground.
The SHO then asked both the boy and the girl to give in writing that they were adults and were willing to marry.
Seeing this, a frustrated Ramachandran whipped out a knife and slashed his daughter’s throat. He then proceeded to slash his wrists, but was overpowered by police.
As the girl was bleeding profusely, she was rushed from Chikmagalur to Hassan for treatment, where she is serious, but doctors are hopeful about her recovery. Mamata may however lose her voice, doctors said.
Moinuddin is now alleging that he is not being allowed to meet Mamata, whose family is taking care of her treatment.
Activists of a local pro-Hindu organisation were objecting the marriage and they were present at the police station when the stabbing took place. The girl’s mother was enraged over her husband’s act and stoned his hired car.
