Mangalore, Nov 18, 2012: Cancer Victors and Yuvaraj Singh Foundation inaugurated the Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), an exclusive and well-equipped centre for the treatment of cancer, at Pumpwell on Nov 18.
The Cancer Victors and the dignitaries on the dais released balloons into the air after traditionally inaugurating the centre.
Prof. Dr. M. Abdul Rahiman, the former vice chancellor of Calicut and Kannur University, symbolically inaugurated the hospital by unveiling the plaque.
In his address, he said that there were no proper medical facilities for cancer patients in the past, but now cancer is a curable condition and several oncologists are devoted to the treatment of cancer.
Further, he spoke of the need to bring about cancer awareness among people because cancer is curable only if detected in the early stages. He said that research studies are currently being done on the role of nanotechnology in improving cancer treatment.
Amit Yadav, general manager of Yuvaraj Singh Foundation; Prof. Dr. M. Vijayakumar, director of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology; and Prof. Dr. Shantharam Shetty, pro chancellor of Nitte University, also spoke on the occasion.
Prof. Shetty said that he was diagnosed with cancer 27 years back, and after being cured of his condition, he had performed over 20,000 surgeries.
