Discrepancies emerge in Bantwal attempt to murder case; probe on

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, June 21, 2025: Discrepancies have surfaced between CCTV footage and the complainant’s version in connection with an attempted murder case reported last week in Sajipanadu, Bantwal taluk. Police have launched an investigation and are examining multiple angles, including a possible link to a cattle seizure incident during Bakrid, said DK SP Dr Arun K.

Meanwhile, a rumour on attack using lethal weapons on Friday night has been declared "baseless" by the police.

Attempt murder

The SP said, Mohammed Mukbul (34), a resident of Nandavar, was riding pillion on a scooter driven by a relative. The duo was en route from Bolyar to Melkar when they noticed two individuals wearing helmets on a stationary scooter near the Deraje bus stop, facing Bolyar. One of the individuals allegedly began running towards them.

Mukbul claimed he did not see any weapons in the individual’s possession but was alarmed by the sudden approach. He instructed his relative to speed away from the spot and did not look back. Upon reaching home, he informed his father about the  encounter.

Clarifying the situation during police inquiry, Mukbul stated that WhatsApp rumours suggesting a sword attack were baseless. He denied witnessing or being part of any such attack and also refuted claims that a crowd had gathered at the spot. Based on his statement, a case was registered at the Bantwal Rural Police Station under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Meanwhile, when the Police Sub-Inspector visited the scene, a few locals questioned the delay in action regarding last week’s attempted murder case. They also pointed out that while cattle being transported during Bakrid were seized at Sajipanadu, no similar urgency was shown in the earlier case. Investigators are now examining if there is any connection between the attempted murder incident and the cattle seizure. Further legal steps will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing probe.
