Mangaluru, Nov 3, 2025: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday unveiled a 6.5-foot statue of Rani Abbakka, the 16th-century warrior queen who valiantly fought against Portuguese colonial forces, in front of Chowtara Aramane at Moodbidri.
The statue, installed by the Javaner Bedra Foundation, marks the 500th birth anniversary of Rani Abbakka and serves as a tribute to her legacy of courage and patriotism.
Speaking at the event, Minister Rao said the government intends to introduce lessons on Rani Abbakka in the school curriculum. “Her bravery must be remembered and taught to the younger generation. Installing this statue is a fitting tribute to her indomitable spirit,” he said.
Sri Bhattaraka Charukeerthi Panditacharyavarya Mahaswamiji of the Moodbidri Jain Mutt said Rani Abbakka’s courage continues to inspire women and youth alike. “This statue will motivate the younger generation to contribute to the nation’s progress,” he remarked.
Former minister K. Abhaychandra Jain hailed the installation as a powerful symbol of women’s empowerment.
During the ceremony, Javaner Bedra organisation president Amarkote submitted a memorandum to the minister, seeking the upgradation of the Moodbidri Primary Health Centre, the establishment of a government blood bank, and the creation of a Rani Abbakka Research Centre.
Kuldeep M. of Chowta’s Palace, KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai, Moodbidri Block Congress president Praveen Jain, and BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari were also present.
