Mangalore Today News Network

New delhi, Mar 16, 2026: Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on Saturday, hours after the Union government revoked its decision to detain him with immediate effect.

Wangchuk had been arrested nearly six months ago, on September 26, 2025, under the National Security Act (NSA) following an order issued by the Leh district magistrate. He had already completed nearly half of the detention period stipulated under the Act.

Ratanada Police Station SHO Dinesh Lakhawat said Wangchuk was released at around 1.30 pm after receiving the order from the central government.

The release formalities were completed by his wife, Geetanjali Angmo, who was present at the jail.

Wangchuk was detained two days after protests in Leh over demands for statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The protests had left more than 45 civilians and 22 police personnel injured.

Announcing the decision through an official statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said Wangchuk had been detained “against the backdrop of a serious law and order situation that arose in the peace-loving town of Leh” with a view to maintaining public order, and noted that he had already undergone nearly half of the detention period under the NSA.

The ministry added that the government has been actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people, expressing hope that the issues would be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including through the mechanism of a High-Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms.
