Sullya, March 29:  Devotees demonstrated their faith in the deity Vishnumoorthi by dancing on live coals, an age-old ritual known as “ottekola” and by running over a bed of live coals, another age-old ritual called “kenda seve,” at Kallugundi near Sampaje in Sullia.

In preparation for this event, the local people placed large stacks of firewood in a wide paddy field. Rituals were performed at the temple to Vishnumoorthi, after which the wood was set on fire. A priest then inaugurated the event by walking slowly over the live coals; and later devotees ran over the bed of live coals.

Devotees fast before running on the bed of live coals and believe that this demonstration of faith makes them and their families blessed, makes their crops yield better, and brings them good health and happiness.

A large number of local people participate in this event, which is held all day and night.
