Crack in train’s bogie halts Mangaluru-Chennai Mail for two hours at Kozhikode

Kasargod, April 28, 2024: Passengers aboard the Mangaluru-Chennai Mail (12602) encountered delays when the train halted at Kozhikode station for two hours due to a crack detected in one of its bogies. The incident, occurring on Thursday evening, disrupted the smooth progression of the journey.

A thorough examination by railway personnel uncovered a 3 mm wide crack in the bogie of the sleeper coach (S2), precisely where the four wheels are affixed. An alert was raised during the train’s departure from Kannur around 4.20 pm, signaling a suspected crack in the bogie. Prompt action ensued from station authorities at Kozhikode railway station.

Upon the train’s arrival at Kozhikode station at approximately 6 pm, officials from the railway mechanical department confirmed the presence of the crack in the bogie of the S2 coach. Consequently, railway staff detached the affected coach from the train, deeming it unsafe for further operation without a complete replacement of the bogie.

Interim measures, including welding, were enacted to ensure passenger safety until the coach could be transported to Shornur for a full bogie replacement. Passengers from the impacted S2 coach were temporarily accommodated in alternate sleeper coaches until arrangements were finalized for their transfer to a new coach from Shoranur.

The train recommenced its journey from Kozhikode at 7.50 pm, albeit two hours later than scheduled. Nonetheless, the incident caused a domino effect on other train services, leading to delays in trains such as the Mangaluru-Thiruvananthapuram Express and Veraval-Thiruvananthapuram Express.
