Deep-sea fishing resumes as trawler boats set sail from Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 4, 2026: Deep-sea fishing activities resumed on Monday, the third day after the end of the annual fishing ban, with around 100 trawler boats departing from the old Mangaluru harbour jetty, carrying fresh hopes for a successful fishing season.

Fishing operations had remained suspended over the past two days due to rough sea conditions and strong winds. Although the boats had been fully prepared with diesel and ice, they could not venture into the sea because of the adverse weather.

With conditions now showing signs of improvement, the trawlers began leaving the harbour one after another through the estuary and headed into the deep sea.

Fishermen said the boats are expected to return to the harbour in about 10 days. The number of additional boats venturing out will depend on the availability of fish in the sea and the outcome of the initial fishing trips.

Malpe

Although the government lifted the ban on mechanised fishing from August 1, no category of fishing boats has ventured into the sea from Malpe harbour due to rough weather.

Fishermen said strong winds have created massive waves in the deep sea, making it impossible to cast fishing nets safely. Consequently, all boats continue to remain anchored at the harbour until sea conditions improve.
