Mangalore, Apr 19, 2012: Ivan D’Souza, the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), told reporters at a press meet held on April 19 Thursday that the Congress will protest against the delay in completing the new Bejai Market.

Revealing further details, he said that the construction of the market commenced in 2003 – 04 and the market was to be completed within five years. In spite of the deadline given, the market is still under construction.

Stating that vendors are now conducting their business from the roadside beside Bejai Church, he said that eight years have passed by since construction work began, but the market has not yet been released to the public. The construction of the market, which was to have cost Rs. 6 crore if completed in time, will now cost more than Rs. 15 crore, he added.

Mr. D’Souza also criticized the passport office, stating that it lacks several facilities, forcing people to wait in long queues in front of it. There are no parking and drinking water facilities, he pointed out. He said that the Congress will organize a protest in front of the office if these problems are not addressed at the earliest.

Praveen Chandra Alva, the president of the Youth Congress, Corporator B. Nagendra, and many other Congress workers and leaders were present at the press meet.
