Udupi, April 21: Congress youth icon Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP-led state government in a round-about manner, referring to it as the most corrupt government ever. In response to a query, Rahul claimed that the Congress has a fool-proof system to punish corrupt politicians, but the Opposition has no power to punish the corrupt. However, he avoided mentioning the names of any particular party or politician.

Interacting with students and the Congress youth in Udupi, Rahul said in response to another query that the RTI has altered the level of corruption with the country, enabling people to bring to light more and more corrupt actions and scams. The RTI has led to more transparency in the administration, he added. Claiming that the Congress pushed the RTI, he said that the Congress might soon push the Lokpal Bill.

Further speaking on the subject, he said that corruption within the government snatches away many opportunities from the youth. He also pointed out that the same politicians who opposed the RTI are now speaking in support of the Lokpal Bill.

In response to a lady’s query regarding the role of women in politics, Mr. Gandhi said that a woman has successfully held the topmost position in Congress, adding that he fully supports the entry of women in politics because they are more sensitive than men.

In response to a query regarding the centre’s failure to take action against the corruption in the state, he said that the Congress cannot be held responsible for the corrupt activities of others although it has authority at the centre.

Speaking about the importance of rural-level politics, he said that rural-level politics can create sweeping changes in the political system of today.

Over 4,000 youth participated in the interaction programme with Rahul Gandhi, the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee, held at Shamili Hall in Ambalpady on April 20, Wednesday. However, certain media persons were not allowed to enter the venue. Although photography was permitted, the time given was just 15 minutes, after which the press photographers were told to leave. Youth Congress workers from 16 DK blocks participated in this event, which lasted from 2:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The students participating in the programme were not permitted to take their bags and mobile phones inside the venue.

G. Parameshwar, the KPCC president and opposition leader in the Karnataka Assembly; Siddaramaiah; and Oscar Fernandes were also present.
