Speaking about the threat of terrorism, he said that terrorism is no longer limited to Jammu and Kashmir, but has spread to South India too. The people of the south must prepare themselves to face terrorist threats at any moment. For this reason, civilian rifle training is a must. The citizens who have undergone this training can easily help the police combat anti-social elements, he said and urged the people to cooperate with the police.

R. Ramesh, the deputy commissioner of police, said that there is a huge communication gap between the public and the police department. While citizens are happy when the police arrest culprits, they do not like it when the police impose fines on vehicle owners who violate traffic laws. He urged the citizens to understand that the police are always engaged in maintaining peace and harmony in society.

The rifle training will be held at a firing range in Moodushedde on the outskirts of the city. Each candidate is permitted to fire 30 rounds. The best shot will be felicitated. Before taking the training, the candidates were requested to take a pledge that they will not utilize the training for any anti-social activities and that they will help the police if required.

ACP B. J. Bhandary said that 101 civilians will be trained during the first phase of the training programme. The trainees, who have never held a rifle in their hands, were thrilled at the prospect of handling arms. The group includes PhD holders, MPhil holders, doctors, accountants, PG holders, engineers, advocates, women, and so on.
