City to be transformed into tourist hotspot: Nagaraj Shetty

Mangalore, July 16: Chairman of Coastal Development Authority B. Nagaraj Shetty said that the Athrady State Highway 67 stretch from Manipal to Bajpe Airport will be developed into a four-lane road in order to facilitate economic activities and vehicular movement in the twin districts. He was addressing media persons at a press conference held in his office on July 16, Friday.

Providing further information about the road-widening project, he said that its first phase will cost Rs. 130 crore and that a report regarding the same will be submitted to the government soon. Mr. Shetty also said that the Mangala Cornish Road will be developed in five phases and that the Gurupura and the Nethravathi rivers will be beautified in order to attract tourists to the city.

Mr. Shetty also said that the fisheries roads of DK, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi will be concretized, listing out the places that will be coming under this project as Mangalore of DK district, Udupi and Kundapura, and Bhatkal, Kumta, Honnavar, Ankola, and Karwar of Uttara Kannada district. He said that the concretization of these roads will not only facilitate timely transport of fish, but also encourage beach tourism and reduce vehicular movement on NH17.

He said that the NFDC (National Fisheries Development Board) has been placed in-charge of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the 800 fish markets of three districts. The Coastal Authority has appointed a team of experts to visit these markets and conduct a study on them with the intention of constructing full-fledged markets with all the required facilities.

He said that the project of solar lighting in five villages will be implemented after receiving the report of experts who are studying the matter, adding that the MESCOM has agreed to provide the required funds. Projects such as Soubhagya Sanjivini, Aquamarine Park, Golf Club, and Hanging Bridge were also discussed.

Secretary of Coastal Development Authority Prabhakar Rao, Prof. Ramachandra Bhat, Prof. Gunakar, Suresh, and other officials were present. Mahesh Kumar, the member of the Fisheries Association, presented the fisheries and road projects.
